Who Are the Merimanders?

Winter Concert 2010!
Established in 1958, the Merimanders are the oldest (and only) all-female a cappella group at Bates College.
We've been around for over fifty years and are continuing to grow as a group!

How Can I Become a Meri?
You have to audition, but don't worry, we don't bite! We hold auditions every year during the first few weeks of school. Look for the Merimanders table set up at the activities fair and we can inform you when and where the auditions will be held! You don't have to prepare anything special, just a verse and a chorus of your favorite song!
Do I Need to have Formal Singing Experience to Audition?
Past musical experience is a plus, but is definitely not required. We are looking for people who can sing well on their own and blend well with the group. If you like to sing, then you should audition!
How often do the Meris practice?
We practice 3 to 4 times a week: three times if we aren't busy and four or more times if we are preparing for a concert. If you are wondering whether you can fit Merimanders into an already busy academic/athletic schedule, it is definitely doable. Many of our members play sports and participate in a number of other clubs while still finding the time to complete homework and sing with the Meris.

Senior Concert 2010!
Where do the Meris perform?
In addition to singing at various Bates events and holding our own concerts each semester, we sometimes get together with groups from other schools by either inviting them to sing with us or going to sing with them. We love to travel to different places in the Maine/New England community to sing! We sing at restaurants, fundraisers, parties, and many other awesome venues.
